Sleep Medicine

Sleep Medicine

Sleep is essential to your physical and mental well-being. Adequate sleep is vital for proper body function in any age group, but is particularly important for growing children. Recommended hours of sleep for children and adolescents vary per age group. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that adults achieve 7-9 hours of sleep per night, while children and adolescents require much more (AASM Adult Recommendations). Millions, however, suffer from sleep disorders that deprive them of necessary rest. The effects of sleep deprivation can be both significant and difficult to diagnose. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea can negatively impact your health by straining the heart and lungs, which can lead to increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

The UT Health East Texas Sleep Disorders Center has board-certified sleep medicine physicians that diagnose and treat sleep disorders in all age groups in Athens, Carthage, Henderson, Jacksonville, Pittsburg, Quitman and Tyler.

UT Health North Campus Tyler is home to the only board-certified pediatric sleep medicine physician, Rodolfo Amaro Galvez.

The UT Health East Texas Sleep Disorders Center in Tyler was the first sleep center in East Texas to receive program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in 2004. Since then, several UT Health East Texas Sleep Disorders Center facilities have been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Those locations include UT Health Athens, UT Health Tyler, UT Health Henderson and UT Health Pittsburg.

If you are suffering from a sleep disorder, ask to be referred to UT Health East Texas Sleep Disorders Center by your physician or call 903-531-8079 to begin the referral process.
