The first East Texas Movement Disorder Center features specialists treating 15 different neurological diseases including essential tremor and Parkinson�s.
A movement disorder center concentrates the skills of a variety of physicians in one place. The ETMC Neurological Institute Movement Disorder Center includes neurosurgeons, physical therapists, neurologists, internists, neuro-psychologists, occupational therapy specialists and a family nurse practitioner, all devoted to helping improve the lives of those with movement difficulties.

Medical Director
The director of the movement disorder center is Dr. George M. Plotkin who received his M.D. magna cum laude at Boston University School of Medicine and his fellowships in movement as well as neuromuscular disorders at Harvard Medical School and affiliated hospitals, such as the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He also holds a Ph.D. from M.I.T.
He specializes in movement disorders (Parkinsonism, essential tremor, dystonias, gait disorders, tic syndromes, etc.), but also treats a wide range of general neurological disorders. He is board certified and is a member of the honorary society Alpha Omega Alpha, as well as having received a number of other awards. He has held numerous appointments at Harvard, Tufts and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He evaluates patients for Deep Brain Stimulation and does programming for DBS in his office. His treatments also include electrodiagnostics and botox injections for dystonia.
Nurse Practitioner
Helen Cassel, RN, NP-C, is the nurse practitioner at the ETMC Movement Disorder Center. She programs deep 
brain stimulation transmitters once they are implanted and also monitors patients with neurological conditions, particularly those with Parkinson�s. She has worked with Dr. George Plotkin since 2000.
She has an extensive healthcare background both in the United Kingdom and in the United States. She earned her nurse practitioner diploma at the University of Wales, Swansea, Wales, UK, and obtained her Health Visitor certificate from Chiswick Polytechnic, London, UK. Additional professional qualifications include State Registered Nurse, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Devon, UK, and State Registered Midwife, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Scotland, UK.
As a nurse practitioner she previously set up and ran an asthma clinic for 250 children under age 16 and subsequently advised on asthma care for adults within the same practice. She has also run a clinic in a residential home for the elderly and initiated and chaired a bereavement discussion group.
She has presentations, lectures and papers to her credit, many related to Parkinson�s and movement disorders.
