Our Chemical Dependency Unit provides inpatient care at our Tyler location.
The intensive inpatient unit is equipped to provide chemical dependency treatment for patients 18 and older. Our unit offers a controlled environment, which maintains structure and intensive medical, as well as psychiatric, monitoring. We also provide chemical dependency treatment on our adolescent unit.
Program Coordinator Arleen Green, LCDC says, "Dependence on drugs begins with the very first pill, and your tolerance level starts to build at that time. Addiction is characterized by compulsive use of a mood-altering chemical even in the face of negative consequences related to that chemical."
Most commonly abused are prescription medications such as opiates and benzodiazepines. Examples are Vicoden and Xanax.
Board certified psychiatrists ensure the goals for treatment are substantially met before a patient is discharged from BHC.
A follow-up plan may include a "step-down" to the New Choices Outpatient Program as well as community support groups.
