Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab

ETMC Rehabilitation offers help to those with heart disease or lung disease through our rehabilitation programs.

Cardiac Rehabilitation: getting your life back after heart disease.

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac Rehabilitation often called Cardiac Rehab is a medically supervised exercise and education program designed to improve your life after you have been diagnosed with a heart condition. Promoted by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, Cardiac Rehab can reduce your risk factors, restore your strength and stamina, and reduce your chance of another heart event.

How does Cardiac Rehab work?
Hospital: Phase I
begins in the hospital with a physician's order when you're admitted for any type of cardiac problem. The cardiac rehab staff will exercise and educate you during your hospital stay. The staff will also coordinate with the cardiac rehab center closest to you to enroll you in outpatient Cardiac Rehab so you can learn how to live with heart disease.

Outpatient: Phase II begins after you're discharged from the hospital or it begins with a referral from your physician. It is in this program where you really begin to benefit from a lifestyle change. The rehab staff guides you through an individualized exercise and education program that helps you learn how to manage your health condition. Generally lasting 6 to18 weeks, Medicare and most health insurances cover Cardiac Rehab for diagnoses of:

  • Stable angina (medically controlled chest pain)
  • Heart attack
  • PTCA or stent placement
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Heart transplant or heart-lung transplant
  • other heart conditions

Who is involved with my rehab care?
Clinical Staff : Your cardiac rehab staff includes supervising physician, registered nurses, exercise physiologists, respiratory therapists, and exercise technicians who will provide the care and encouragement you need during your rehab experience.

Is Cardiac Rehab covered by insurance?
Insurance benefits vary, but we will check your insurance for coverage.

How will I maintain the benefits from Cardiac Rehab?
Health Enhancement Programs: Phase III is a self-pay exercise program. This maintenance program is the right place for you if you want to continue to exercise with others who have heart disease or you have a health condition that may need oversight by clinical staff trained in various health conditions.
