Emergency medical personnel know the clock starts ticking the second an accident occurs, and the first 60 minutes form a golden hour in which a person needs to reach the appropriate medical care.
The CAMTS-certified Air 1 relies on three aircraft, including the powerful EC
135 helicopter and the BO105. These are important when time is most important. All helicopters are ready for lift off within seven minutes of a call, and are staffed with a nurse and paramedic.
Serving an area that stretches from Oklahoma to Houston and from Shreveport to Dallas, ETMC's Air 1 works as part of the regional trauma network in order to help save lives.
In some cases Air 1 may fly directly to the scene of an accident or it may provide hospital-to-hospital transportation, moving patients quickly from the point of primary care to the hospital where the specialized treatment they need can be provided.
Staffed with 12 regular pilots and 24 staff members, Air 1 is on 24-hour call and averages 100 to 110 flights a month.
