Construction and renovation has begun for phase III of an
ongoing project to renew and expand ETMC Fairfield.
The East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System,
in partnership with the Fairfield Hospital District, is funding the
nearly $3.7 million project. The FHD has provided $1.478 million
for the project. ETMC will provide the remaining $2.2 million.
"We are so excited to begin work on the next phase of this
ongoing project, which when complete, will provide this community
with a virtually new hospital," said Ruth "Raz" Cook, FACHE,
administrator of ETMC Fairfield. "This effort would not be possible
without our partnership with the Fairfield Hospital District Board
and their support of our efforts to provide the highest quality
healthcare to the citizens of Fairfield and surrounding areas.
"The upgrades to our infrastructure and equipment, as well as
the expansion and remodeling of our facilities, will make providing
healthcare services easier for our staff and provide a more
pleasing atmosphere for our patients and guests," Cook said.
Phase III of the project includes the construction of a six-room
north wing, remodeling of the facility's core and remodeling of the
east patient wing.
The 4,179-square-foot addition includes six rooms--two
intermediate care rooms, observation and isolation rooms, offices
for nutrition services and dictation and storage areas.
In the current east patient wing, 14 semi-private rooms will be
converted to eight private rooms. These patient rooms will be
enlarged to meet today's hospital standards and will include new
equipment, mechanical systems and furnishings.
The hospital's core will be remodeled, including a major upgrade
to the mechanical and infrastructure systems -- replacing and
enlarging air handling equipment and much of the electrical
circuitry for the area.
As part of the remodel, the dining room will be expanded to
double its current size. The area also will receive all new
finishes, floors, ceilings and a new entry.
The nurses' station will be remodeled, corridors will get a
facelift and a new assisted bathing facility will be
In addition, a new waiting area will be created. This dedicated
area will be for family members and friends of patients undergoing
inpatient care or outpatient procedures. Currently, the only
space available to congregate is in the main lobby.
More than 11, 500-square-feet of the existing facility is part
of the remodeling project. All work on phase III is expected to be
complete in about a year. Fitzpatrick Architects of Tyler is the
architect for the project and RPR Construction of Tyler is the
Construction began nearly two years ago on the project to renew
and expand ETMC Fairfield. The first phase involved the expansion
and renovation of the hospital's emergency department, which was
completed and opened in the fall of 2011. The emergency department
now features nine spacious treatment rooms and a light-filled
waiting area, while the triage room, located beside the patient
reception desk, enables the staff to quickly assess patients.
Phase II, which was dedicated last fall, added 11,000 square
feet to the hospital's foot print and features a new front entry
that includes a fountain, extensive landscaping and additional,

bright and welcoming lobby and waiting room.
That addition also houses cardiopulmonary rehabilitation,
outpatient registration and an administrative suite that features

Mechanical and electrical system upgrades were included in phase
II of the project. Construction and upgrade expenditures totaled
approximately $13 million for phases I and II of the project.
